After care is most important
Please insure you read to understand how to look after your extensions and prevent damage
Claire's Hair Extensions highly recommened that you use products suited for hair extensions.
They will restored your natural hair and condition of your hair extensions, this is essential to looking after your extensions, although the extensions are human hair extensions, they do not receive any nutrients from your scalp like natural hair.
Hair extensions do not produce their own oils. Over a period of time, the extension can dry, becoming brittle and less attractive. One of the main keys to prolonging the lifespan of your extensions is to rehydrate and protect. We moisturise our skin, so why not the hair? A good moisturising barrier will do just this. The best moisture for hair is actually water.
Water is good internally and externally for hair. Internally a well-hydrated body means that there is sufficient moisture for hair function, externally it means that the hair can maintain elasticity and suppleness. As extensions are not fed by the body, it is essential to hydrate and feed them manually. For moisturizing your extensions, water is the king. However, your extensions are porous and keeping this moisture in is next to impossible without sealing it in.
Trapping Moisture In The Extensions
The best way to trap moisture in your extensions is to use a sealant. Moisturisers/sealants are made of large molecules. These molecules are too large to be absorbed by the hair strand. Instead what they do is coat the strands and seal in the moisture that is already in the hair. So the key to avoiding dry extensions is to hydrate and seal - but without using/suffering from the drying effects of products that are not designed to help. A good moisturising coat does not just seal, it also enhances the brilliance and lustre of your natural hair colour.
D&C Hair Extension shampoo, conditioner and treatments coat, seal, help restore and add shine.
Washing Your Extensions.
Once the extensions have been appiled, you should avoid washing hair for 2-3 days, longer will benefit the best hold for your extensions. We recommend your extensions must be washed only 2-3 times a week (no more then this) before washing we suggust brushing your hair extensions thoroughly to remove any teasing or tangles, using a wide tooth comb or soft brush to separate those bonds. We also suggest you do not use hair products which have alcohol as one of there ingredients can cause to dry out your hair extensions excessively!
When you wash your hair extensions, avoid tipping your head over the bath since it can cause them to tangle. Wash them with your head upright at all times (shower is ideal). The hair should be gentle massage on the scalp with fingertips, using a light up and down motion. DO NOT WASH the hair in circular motions (never rub the hair together) as this can cause tangles or even matting. Smooth your shampoo on the scalp and avoid rubbing vigorously.
Pick out the top sections of your hair and then apply the conditioner to it. Once hair is washed, pat them gently rather then rubbing them together. Conditioner should be used only mid-lengths to ends.
Avoid applying the conditioner or anything oily to your bonds since these will cause them to become slippery and soft. Also do not apply too much water all of a sudden as it swell up hair and causes tangles. Keep water warm and not hot!
How to care for the extensions before sleeping.
Always make sure to thoroughly dry your hair out before you hit bed for the night. So, if you're planning on washing your hair, make sure you do it several hours before bed time. You also need to tie up or braid your hair gently before you sleep so that the hair does not tangle, Brusing them before you tie up will also help keep them neat.
Drying Your Extensions.
Before you detangle your hair, it is advisable to use leave in conditioner spray. Detangle them using a wide tooth comb and ensure that you do not have any contact with the bonds. Ensure all bonds are completely dried. You will have to be quite carefil while brusing hair when they're wet. Ensure that the extensions hair is supported by holding your bonds.
Section the hair and then blow dry with soft bristle round brush for sleek finish. Ensure that the bonds are not snagged. We recommend you use a themal protection serum before using straighteners/curlers for a smooth finish.
Styling Your Extensions.
Tongs, crimpers, irons, and heated rollers can be used on your extension hair. However, it is advisable that you use heat protection spray for protecting your extensions hair and natural hair before using them. Hairsprays, gels and serums can be used but the keratin bonds should be avoided as it can cause slippage, stickiness and even cause the bonds to weaken. Try not to overuse the heat tools as this can cause your extensions to dry out considerably, again use a protection serum to avoid these issues.
Colouring Your Extensions.
We strongly suggest you do not perm, tint or colour extension hair. As all of extension hair is multi-tonal (made up of different colours) the dye may pick-up different tones. If you do dye make sure you avoid the bonds and its only advisable to go darker never lighter. We also cannot be responsible for any problems you have with the hair as any contact with the bonds can seriously effect the keratin and also over dyeing will damage the cuticles. These products contain various elements which may damage the extension hair.
Brusing & Combing.
The extensions are attached to your natural hair and therefore pulling very hard and mistreating them can result in pulling out of your natural hair. For a brush, you should only use an extension brush which has cushioned base with solf bristles (Tangle Teaser) never use a brush with balls on the ends of brush, this can break extension hair, causing lots of shedding. Start styling your hair from the bottom and then slowlyto the top portion. Always make sure to brush gentle manner and never exceed over 3 times a day. The tangle teaser will glide over your bonds gently. When you brush your extensions you should hold your bonds and ensure there is no added stress on the hair.
Everyday Activities.
Those who use sunbeds should wrap their hair first in a towel. Thes sun beds will dry out hair and can weaken or even start to melt the keratin bonds.
For those who work out regularly or use steam room and sauna regularly should ensure that their bonds are dried/cool down completely after the session at the earliest. Keeping bonds in damp enviroment can make them deteriorate.
It is advised not to get hair extensions in case you are pregnant and for 1 year post having the baby, since hormonal hair loss during pregnancy and after it can accelerate through hair extensions.
Holidays & Swimming.
Swimming with hair extenions in is not recommended. However, in case you do, the following precautions are adviced to be taken:
Use a covered band and place the long extensions in a braid. DO NOT get the extension hair wet. Keep head above the water, avoid diving and under water swimming. Use leave in conditioner before entering the pool/sea. The chlorine present in pools as well as the salt present on the sea along with heat can matt and the chemical within the pool can cause discolouration. Salt, pool chemicals and chlorine can cause disintegration and break down of keratin bonds which can weakness/stickiness of your extensions which can lead to matting or extensions falling out.
When extensions get wet while swimming, it is adviced that you dry them immediately after rinising hair out with fresh warm water and use a leave in conditioner. Avoid brushing wet extensions hair and dry them immediately. Make sure the extensions are not tangled after swimming. Again avoid sleeping with wet extensions and ensure that they have been completely dried before going to bed.
ESSENTIAL IMPORTANT TIPS.
NEVER go to sleep with wet hair, always make sure your extensions and bonds are dry before sleeping.
Take care of your human hair extensions as you would your own natural hair, and remember that like your natual hair, your extensions can be easily damagedwith to much heat or abuse.
It is important that you should take good care of your extensions to make the most of them by using the right products.
Several manufactures have tested and tried various methods before they select a good aftercare range of products for hair extensions. All of this is done to make sure that extensions get the right product balance and thesproducts also help you maintain natural hair.
When removing knots or tangles start at the ends and work your way up.
Never pull on extensions.
Gentle tie your hair up in a scarf or wear in a ponytail or plait while sleeping.
Wash 2-3 times aweek with recommended shampoo designed for hair extensions in warm/cool water.
Hair extensions prove to be an effective way to change your apperance but they will need some care and maintenance. After getting the extensions fitted, a styist can guide you on how to look after the extensions in the best way.
Hair extensions normally cost quite a bit of money and they do take some time to attach. Therefore, it is best to take care of them the right way.
Several stylists will also advice you that you should not wash your hair for 5 days after the extensions are fitting. Doing this will ensure that the bonds have enough time to set and will reduce the possibilty of hair shedding later on from your bonds.
Keep your scalp moisturised, but avoid condintioner or silcone based products if your hair is bonded because these products will loosen the bonds.
When drying your hair, never rub or scrub with a towel. Simpy wrap hair in a towel with head upright or air dry if possible.
One of the first things noticeable immediately after the extensions have been installed, for the next few days is that the scalp can feel tender. However, this is normal and it will go away eventually. This isn't any type of problem but is caused because there is added weight on the scalp by the extensions.
Hair will grow by approximately 1.5 inches within 3 months. Hair roots start tangling together often if the bonds have not been correctly seprated. Therfore it is not really healthy for your hair nor your scalp. Also recommend after having extensions in for 2-3 months to give your hair/scalp at least 2 weeks break.
The lighter colours will habe bleach content and so thier life span will not be as long as hair that is not bleached. These lighter shades require more care and heat application will have to be avoided for improving lifespan. If you do use heat tools highly recommend using thermal protection serum to help avoid damage from heat.
Do not use shampoos or conditioners (even toners) that contain oils or fruits oils such as wheatgerm or citrus, using shampoo that contains these ingredients could result in damage to your extension bonds and may cause discolourment and cause extensions to dry out.
With new hair extensions, it would not be nessessary for you to wash hair as frequently as you normally would. You should not have to wash your extensions more then 2-3 times a week. Any more than this will put alot of stress on your extensions beacause of excssive styling.
It is also necessary for you to use conditioners and shampoos that are recommended and made for use on hair extensions. The standard brands genrerally contain very high amount of salt or soduim chloride that can dry your hair out. They also contain silcone ingredients that can make the bonds weaker and break them down. loose bonds can cause your extensions to fall out.
Therefore, using the right products is important.
When rinising hair, rinse for a few seconds extra as the extra volume created by your extensions may mean it takes a little longer to rinse.
If you have an oily scalp wash hair regularly using dry shampoo, as build up of natural oils could lead to your bonds slipping or falling out.
You can use styling products but avoid on the keratin bonds as they can cause stickiness and even the bonds to weaken.
You will also have to keep hair in good condition by regularly using moisturising conditioner. While selecting the conditioner, ensure that it does not come in contact with the bonds since this will weaken your bonds.
After you hair has been washed you will have to be extra careful while styling and drying it. Hair is always weak when it is wet. Therefore, you should dry it gently and handle it carefully. Your hair extensions will have a longer life and they will look better if ther are taken care of properly so it is worth investing a little extra time to do it right.
It is normal for you to lose some hair when you brush since most people loose up to 100 strands of hair every day! You will be doing less damage if you have extensions since you would not be using the heat directly on natural hair. Treat your extensions with the same respect as your natural hair. Good aftercare and regular maintenance will keep your hair looking great for longer.
You can style the extensions the same way as normal hair, ie blow dry, straighten or curl, as long as heat protection serum is used before use.
It is adviced that you should have monthly maintenance appointment after getting extensions fitted to ensure that everything is well. This will be the right time to get any bonds replaced or removed and also trimmed.
As hair extensions aren't as strong as your normal hair, some will loosen and drop out, this is normal on all extensions.
Hair extensions will need some amount of regular maintenance. However, once you get used to it and learn how to wash, style and dry extensions, they will look good for a longer time so it well worth the effort!
If maintenance appointments are not kept and the above aftercare advice is not followed through by yourself on your extensions then we cannot be responsible for any damage done to your own hair.
Also if you are not 100% happy with your extensions, you have 7 day period from the date of your fitting to have them taken out or maintained free of charge. After the 7 day period you will be charged the usual rate for maintenance and removal.
